JHAudio JH|5 Custom Fit Earbuds (yes, those are earbuds)

Custom fit headphones, as in ones that are molded to your ears, usually cost well north of $500.  Not any more.  JHAudio now offers a pair of custom molded headphones for a hair under $400 ($399 to be exact).  When you consider the price and customization it’s actually is a bit of a steal, especially for any of those of you in the market for superior ambient sound isolation and don’t wanna hassle with active noise cancellation, which often means changing batteries and a bullky setup.
JHAudio says that their JH|5 PRO headphones deliver “unsurpassed quality and sound clarity.”  Inside each ear bud is proprietary sound driver, which incorporate an unspecified amount of drivers that should produce bellowing bass, solid mids and crisp highs.  In fact they sound so damn good, they’ve sold them to a handful of celeb musicians, including members of Aerosmith, Guns ‘N Roses, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow and others.
Now, unlike other high end headphones you’ll have to visit an audio specialist and have these custom molded to your ear shape, which enables the unparralled sound isolation. Once completed, you’ll be able to choose from 50 finishes or simply leave them in a clear acrylic shell allowing you to view the components inside.
The  JH|5 PROs ship in a velvet bag inside a personalized Otterbox 1000 case that ensure your headphones won’t be damaged.

Eclipse Super Yacht is the Worlds Largest at 538′, Includes 6-foot Screens in Every Room

In our time we’ve seen some grandiose boats. And by boats we mean yachts, otherwise known as “stink pots” – the name is presumably derived from the grotesque amount of fuel they burn.  But nothing, at least to date, compares to the M/Y Eclipse.  This beast measures 538-feet long and was built for Roman Abramovich.
The shear size of this boat isn’t the only aspect of this floating home that makes it notable.  All 24 of the guest cabins include their very own 6-foot movie screen.  Say what?!?  In addition to the guest cabin amenities, which better have walk in showers, heated floors and diamond encrusted mirrors – at least as far as we’re concerned – there are two swimming pools, a plethora of hot tubs, its very on discotheque, two helipads, a mini sub and three smaller boats that are probably anything but a dinghy.
The upkeep in the ship is an astounding $60 million a year, which sounds even too rich for those of a billionaire status.  Fortunately, if the owner welches on his payments, there is long range radar to protect from an influx of missile attacks, anti-bugging devices and a bridge and master cabin that are finished in armor platting and bullet proof windows.  Last but not least, a system looks for cameras (i.e. paparazzi) and directs a laser at them blinding the would be celebrity photographer from snapping a lurid pic.

Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock

These days, having a laptop and a desktop computer is overkill.  Why so?  The laptops of today, especially the Macbook Pros, are powerful enough that there really isn’t a feat it can’t perform; video editing, number crunching and graphics rendering.  That said, a larger screen never hurts or does a variety of perphiral to complement your laptop, such as a printer, hard drive and so forth.  But seriously, who wants to plug in all those devices one at a time when you return to your home base?
Belkin is targeting the latest generation of Macbook owners with an autumn release of the Thunderbolt Express Dock.  We took a brief look at it at CES 2012 and we were impressed to say the least.  The finish and weight of the device is something we relish to hold in our hands again.  The dock itself jacks into your lappy via Thunderbolt and supports Gigabit Ethernet, 3x USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire 800 port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and two thunderbolt ports  (one upstream and one downstream) for daisy chaining other devices.  But that’s not what we really loved about this dock.  In addition to all of these wonderful ports you’ll also found an HDMI port, allowing you to easily connect your Macbook Air to not just an LCD monitor, but a LCD or Plasma TV.
There is one small caveat, though.  It will cost $299 when it launches later this year.

Canadian Teenagers Send LEGO-naut Into Space (video)

Teens these days are finding interesting ways to occupy their time. Two 17-year-old Canadian teens use a home-stitched parachute and some equipment they found on Craigslist to send a LEGO man 80,000-feet into the air. Two weeks ago, Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad attached the small LEGO plastic figurine sporting the Canadian flag to a helium balloon (launched by a football pitch) and sent it into space.  The two captured the entire journey of its decent, which lasted 97 minutes using four cameras. They also attached a GPS receiver to the Styrofoam box that carried the cameras and LEGO man. The entire project took about four months to prepare, where the boys spend every Saturday working on building everything. LEGO even sent the boys a note of congratulations, stating how amazed they are by “the creative ways in which Lego fans” use their products.

Battlefield 3 PC Case Mod Features Chain Gun and Drinks Fridge

Famed case modder Brian Carter created one insane and awesome customized PC to take part in the competition run by Ruptr. Carter had to choose between crating a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3 themed case. He chose to base it off of Battlefield 3 as depicted by an airbrushed Battlefield image on one side of the case and a massive crosshair intake fan on the other.
But it also features a spinning mini chain gun positioned on the front of the case that can be turned on and off via its huge military toggle switches and it also functions as a drinks fridge that’s hidden in a first aid pack. It’s one hell of an amazing gaming case that any diehard gamer would die for!

Mackie’s DL1608 i-Pad Controller Mixer Redefines Live Mixing

Sound techs are no longer confined to the sound booth when working live shows thanks to Mackie’s DL1608 iPad controlled mixer that combines the power of a full-featured digital mixer with the mobility of an iPad. Mackie’s compact mixers are used in recording studios everywhere and the 16-channel DL1608 features all the controls you’d find on regular compact mixers thanks to its Master Fader app that provides groundbreaking DAW mixing features and functionality to the live environment. Engineers can easily wander the venue and still adjust and fine-tune the mix from anywhere in the concert.
The Master Fader app comes with multiple screens that provides fader control, EQ and compression and gate setting, as well as access to reverb and delay effects. Users can save mix snapshots and recall them with a simple touch. If the mixer is part of a permanent installation, the iPad can be locked down, but it also has a wireless connection, allowing engineers to undock it and adjust mixes on the go. It can also support up to iPads at the same time, allowing multiple engineers to control the mix at once. Featuring a modern, sleek design, the Mackie iPad controlled mixer will become available in May or June and be priced at around $1,000.

Pentax Optio VS20 Digital Camera Sports Two Shutter Buttons

Digital cameras these days are about as interesting as watching paint dry.  So as you can imagine we skip over a fair bit of the new models announced that fall into the point and shoot category.  The Pentax’s Optio VS20, while far from a ground breaking product, does offer a few features we haven’t seen in this category of camera before.
Unlike most point and fire cameras of this ilk, the VS20 sports two shutter release buttons; one on the top for landscape shots and one on the side for those portrait snaps.  That said, don’t mistake the VS20 as a one trick pony.  It boasts a massive 20x optical zoom, which is very unorthodox for a camera of this size, along with a 3-inch LCD, triple shake reduction and the ability to capture 720p HD video.  Last but not least, Pentax has also included two tripod mounts, mimicking the extra shutter trigger placement.
The Pentax Optio VS20 will be available in black and white for $249.95 this February.

Nokia Lumia 710 review: Smack in the middle

Nokia Lumia 710 has a tall task at hand. The second brainchild of the Nokia- Microsoft partnership is the budget-friendly option in the lineup. It will try to entice first time smartphone buyers, while battling the Windows Phone establishment in the face of HTC and Samsung.
While the upscale Nokia Lumia 800 is clearly the object of more attention for its impressive build and superior features, the Lumia 710 is expected to sell in bigger numbers and perhaps bring higher profits. From a business perspective, the smartphone is even more important than its flagship sibling.

Just don't take the budget reference to Nokia Lumia 710 at face value. Because of Microsoft's strict hardware requirements for the Windows Phone platform, the smartphone has the same 1.4GHz Scorpion CPU and 512MB of RAM as the Lumia 800, therefore promising identically smooth handling. In order to maintain the budget status and keep the price down, Nokia Lumia 710 has less built-in memory, an LCD screen instead of AMOLED, and a 5MP camera. Its design is less ambitious than the flagship's, but the Lumia 710 is still solidly built, even if not as good looking.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Quad-band 3G with 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA support
  • 3.7" 16M-color ClearBlack LCD capacitive touchscreen with WVGA resolution
  • Scratch resistant Gorilla glass display cover
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual LED flash, 720p video recording
  • Windows Phone 7.5 OS (Mango)
  • 1.4GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset, 512MB of RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and free lifetime voice-guided navigation
  • Digital compass
  • 8GB on-board storage
  • Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic
  • Built-in accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack; FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port
  • Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR
  • Deep and coherent SNS integration throughout the interface

Main disadvantages

  • LCD display's quality is questionable
  • No Flash or Silverlight support in browser
  • No USB mass storage (file management and sync pass only through Zune)
  • No video calls and no front-facing camera either
  • No memory card slot
  • microSIM card slot
  • No native DivX/XviD support, videos have to be Zune-transcoded
  • Disappointing audio quality
  • Unimpressive battery life
The level of equipment sets the Nokia Lumia 710 on a collision course with two major rivals in the Windows Phone realm - the Samsung Omnia W/Focus Flash and HTC Radar. The Finnish offering however, has a few exclusive software tricks up its sleeve, which are expected to give it a slight edge over its rivals. The most prominent of course, being Nokia Drive - the exclusive and free lifetime navigation service.
As far as hardware goes, the three devices are almost identical, save for the screen technology and choice of finish.

Huawei U8860 Honor review: Way of the Dragon

The Huawei Honor is made in China and proudly so. Designed, engineered and created in the Land of the Dragon, it's nothing like your run-of-the-mill cheap knock-off. It's a genuine Chinese product, not just something put together for someone else – including premium brands drawn by the low manufacturing costs.
The Huawei Honor is a Chinese smartphone – and one with solid specs too. Not as loaded as the Meizu MX, but a lot more subtle too in doing an impression of some of its illustrious contemporaries.
Anyway, most phones in the Huawei lineup looks like a phone you've seen. This is not a trivia quiz though. And we don’t care what phone (or phones) the Huawei Honor brings to mind. There must be more important things to Huawei than coming up with fresh original designs. How much bigger, you ask? Well, how about - pretty huge.
A multibillion multinational, Huawei is - to put it simply - the Chinese version of Motorola or Ericsson. One of the world’s leading network and telecom equipment manufacturers, they've been making mobile phones too for a while now.
Ideos should ring a bell: a small lineup of low-to-mid-tier Android smartphones and tablets. The Honor is the next step for them. It’s pretty much the company’s current flagship. A 1.4GHz-powered Gingerbread-running smartphone with a rather interesting custom skin. The 4” FWVGA screen and the 8 megapixel camera are the other prominent features on the list.

Key Features

  • Quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G support
  • 14.4 Mbps HSDPA; 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 1.4GHz Snapdragon CPU; Adreno 205 GPU; Qualcomm MSM 8255Т chipset; 512MB RAM; 4GB ROM
  • 1GB storage, microSD card support (up to 32GB)
  • 4.0” LCD display of FWVGA (854 x 480) resolution; 245ppi pixel density
  • 8 megapixel auto-focus camera with geotagging and HDR; HD (720p@30fps) video recording, LED flash
  • Front-facing VGA camera
  • Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with custom Huawei launcher
  • Custom lockscreen with shortcuts to messaging, camera and missed calls
  • Huawei Cloud + Store offer exclusive content and 16GB of cloud storage
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n; hot-spot and DLNA connectivity
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
  • GPS with A-GPS; Digital compass
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Accelerometer, Gyroscope and proximity sensor
  • Stereo FM radio
  • Active noise cancellation with secondary mic
  • Office document viewer
  • Powerful 1900 mAh Li-Po battery
  • Web browser with Adobe Flash 11 support
  • Smart dialing

Main disadvantages

  • Cheapish gloss
  • Real smudge magnet
  • Poor screen quality
  • Non hot-swappable microSD card
  • No hardware shutter key
  • No native video calling despite built-in VGA camera
Droids come in all shapes and sizes, feature sets and price tags. You’ve heard it all about Samsung’s droids, or Sony Ericsson’s, or HTC’s. And think that’s all there’s to know about Android. Well, apparently Huawei can show a few tricks too.
We're not quite sure about the first impression the Huawei U8860 Honor leaves. You'd do well though not to let it fool you. Plain design and more cheap gloss than we're comfortable with - most people will find it hard to believe they're dealing with a rather impressively spec'd handset.

MLG Pro Circuit Controller hands-on (CES)

If you look at anyone’s gamepads, chances are they are the original PS3 or 360 controllers. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; both Sony and Microsoft put thousands of hours of research into making their controllers perfect, and though neither is, both are very solid. But after five and six years respectively, has there really been nothing so much better?
I found one that is, and from what I’ve seen thus far, it is glorious. From Mad Catz, who over the past five years has undergone a complete transformation and introduced a large handful of great products. The MLG Pro Circuit Controller is not only the most customizable gamepad I’ve ever seen, it’s also the toughest. I spent a few minutes just pushing and pressing on it, and it’s as solid as gamepads come.
Customization is a big deal for the Pro Circuit. Every controller ships with two sets of thumbsticks and two d-Pads, all of which are interchangeable and replaceable. They come in two styles, PS3 and 360, so thumbsticks can be concave or convex, and the d-Pad can be full or separate button. Even the faceplate and palm rests can be replaced with different styled plastics, like glossy or a textured plastic coating. Additional styles can be purchased separately online. It even comes with weights, up to 70 grams, that are completely interchangeable.
I spent a little while holding and playing with it, and you may be turned off by the $130 price point, but from what I’ve seen thus far, the MLG Pro Circuit may be the last controller you’ll ever need. One problem that Mad Catz has found is people who play often, people like myself, go through controllers fairly quickly because they wear out, break, have ripped cables…there’s always something. Mad Catz thinks it has fixed all of these problems. The cable is tethered and screws onto the controller, the build is solid, and it’s all completely adjustable.
Of course, it is wired, which is because of the “MLG” part of the controller. Pro gamers don’t want a wireless controller because they’re slightly slower and have some lag, and such controllers are illegal at professional gaming tournaments. While I’d love to see a similar wireless controller, or a build that works both wired and wirelessly, this one is not like that. The other thing to note is that while you can get both thumbstick models, there is a difference between the 360 and PS3 models. For gamers who own both consoles like myself, because of branding and licensing issues, there won’t be one Pro Circuit Controller that works on both consoles. Both models will work on the PC.
The MLG Pro Circuit Controller is available now, though I haven’t found it available anywhere except for the Xbox 360 version on Amazon, for $100. That’s for the controller, two sets of thumbsticks and two d-Pads, a 9′ threaded cable, and a carrying case for all of it. Varying and additional thumbsticks, d-Pads, cables, face plates and other accessories will all vary and will be available later on.

iHome idM5 Keyboard Speaker System (CES)

The tablet computer has all but replaced the laptop for many, many people.  Solidifying this notion is iHome with the unveiling of the idM5 at this year’s CES.  What is it?  In short order, a full sized Bluetooth keyboard and speaker system in one.  If you take a closer look you’ll see there are a set of media controls for the iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch) and a keyboard cover that doubles as a stand to hold your tablet at a comfortable viewing angle.  And last but not least is a USB port for charging up your device, though it won’t support connectivity, just powering up.
We had a chance to get a short hands on with the device.  The keyboard is comfortable and the speakers, which are built into the left and right side of the keyboard, are surprisingly loud.
iHome hasn’t given us a price or launch date, but we expect it to arrive after the start of Q3

Liquipel Provides Waterproof Coating for Electronic Devices

Protect your electronic devices with the Liquipel that’s a clear coat, waterproof shield that will protect against any liquids. The Southern California-based company that specializes in researching and developing “innovative coatings for the past five years” (per their website) have come up with a clear coat that’s 1,000 times thinner than human hair (making it invisible to the human eye and virtually undetectable) and acts as a shield to all liquids. Starting at $59, the Liquipel permanently bonds on the molecular level to your device (both inside and out) so that if it does meet water or any liquid, nothing will happen to your device. It also won’t compromise the device’s performance or usability in any way, while still providing protection throughout the lifespan of the device. So far only nine devices are compatible with Liquipel, including iPhone, HTC, Samsung and Motorola devices.

Vizio Releasing All-In-One PC This Spring

Vizio has officially entered the computer market and will be releasing their all-in-one PCs and laptops this spring. Their all-in-one PCs will come in two sizes—24-and 27-inch versions—and feature a very sleek design (that’s sharp and elegant at the same time) with an ultra-thin keyboard, touchpad and a base unit.  The screen is said to be thinner than the iMac, only because the computer’s guts are sandwiched on the aluminum base. It also features stereo speakers that are located on each side of the base and a subwoofer in the power supply. There’s also an HDMI input, which allows users to use the display as a TV, but Vizio isn’t including a TV tuner with this device. Vizio also hasn’t released info on what Intel processor it’ll use in its new all-in-one PCs, but more info will probably drop closer to its ship date (around May or June).

Star Trek Electronic Door Chime

It’ll be sometime until we can travel across the galaxy in a heartbeat. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t all be able to enjoy some of the technological advancements that Gene Rodenbarry envisioned.  Well my friends, the future is officially here…that is if you consider the future the Star Trek Electronic Door Chime.
Like all good things gimmicky you can pick this up at ThinkGeek for $29.99.  Installation is as simple as mounting it on the wall next to any door.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t include the necessary motors to open and close your door, but it will sound that classic Star Trek “swoosh” sound when someone crosses the threshold thanks to a built-in motion sensor. Alternatively, you can program it to emit a Red Alert sound, you know, just in case a Klingon enters your midst, or say a pesky younger brother.

Covert Magnetic Lock

Say magnetic and we just about jump with joy.  Show us a magnetic product and we’ll immediately dispense cash to the person selling the product.  Case in point, the Covert.
At a glance the product, which comes from the collective minds of Quirky, allows you to lock and unlock your drawers or cupboards using a magnetic key. However, it’s a bit more complicated than that.  First, you’ll need to install the special magnetic latch that comes in two pieces.  Both pieces attach inside the drawer using either a temporary adhesive or screws.  The screws provide far more security, though the caveat is that you’ll permanently damage the furniture.  The adhesives are good for those of you residing in a dorm room or renting furniture.  Once installed, it’s as simple as closing the drawer and dragging the magnetic key from right to left, which unlocks the sliding latch embedded in the drawer.
It’s a genius simple design, but like many of Quirky’s products this one hasn’t gone into production.  In fact, they’re trying to drum up interest, so hit the site and tell them how much you’d be willing to pay for this.  Regardless, we get the feeling that we’ll see this product end up at Bed Bath and Beyond before year’s end.

Mophie Universal Powerstation Pro (CES)

Head deep into the outback, the Sahara desert or the rain forest and you’ll most certainly find yourself in need of a battery or two to charge your mobile devices.  Base camp should provide you with some sort of power source, but that is hardly a guarantee.  Which is exactly what Mophie’s Juice Pack Universal Powerstation Pro is; a 6000mAh guarantee to be more specific.
If anything it reminds us of those ruggedized hard drives from Lacie.  Though instead of a spindle, this battery pack is capable of charging up your iPad thanks to a 2.1amp USB port as well as a secondary port, which we assume is just 1amp, suitable for your iPhone.  In terms of charging, this brick of charging goodness should be able to power your iPhone 4 almost four times and your iPad 2 to about 80% capacity.
We got a brief hands on with the device at CES 2012, though it wasn’t working.  While the battery pack looks rather large in size, it’s actually pretty light weight and all things relative pretty slender considering its capabilities.
Mophie hasn’t made the Universal Powerstation Pro’s price official, but we’re hearing about $100.

Belkin Dyle TV: Live TV for iOS

Sure, Hulu and Netflix will suffice for most when it comes to fulfilling their TV needs.  And while a terrestrial TV antenna is great for when you’re at home, you know for catching the game, it’s hardly a resolve for those of you that are on the road.  Enter Belkin’s Dyle TV dongle.
As you’ve probably sussed out it attaches to the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch’s 30-pin plug (they might make a version for Android devices) and provides your iOS device with over the air terrestrial TV from a variety of content providers that includes Fox, ION TV,  Univision, Bahakel, Telemundo, NBC and more.
Belkin, who is the hardware manufacture, hasn’t said at what quality it will receive in, but since HDTV is the default these days, we don’t see why it wouldn’t be anything less, though the iPhone and iPad can’t display a true 1080p picture.
Belkin has partnered with Mobile Content Venture, who runs and operates Dyle TV.  They say when the product launches sometime this year, Dyle will cover 50% of the US population, which in other terms is more than 72 stations in 32 markets.
We saw the device at CES 2012, but unfortunately it wasn’t a working prototype.

OnLive Desktop now available, offers free cloud-based Windows desktop (CES)

OnLive, the cloud-gaming service, has just broken into the consumer space with OnLive Desktop, and iPad (and soon Android and phone) app that gives users free access to a Windows cloud-based space. With 2GB of free storage and access to Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, along with some basic Windows 7 functions (like the Microsoft Surface picture viewing application, file storage, media viewing, etc.), you can now use your iPad as a Windows 7 device.
Yes, note the irony in that statement. The only way to get an authentic touch experience for Windows 7 without putting down $15K for a Surface table is with an iPad.
I got to play briefly with the service, and it’s pretty fluid and I was impressed with how it ran. iPad users can download the app right now here for free.
The service is currently only available for free with 2GB, though the company has revealed three additional enterprise plans. The first is $10/month and offers 50GB of storage, all of the features of the free service though with higher bandwidth priority, and the option to purchase and use additional software that developers make available through the service. That means applications like Adobe Photoshop or Autodesk may be available without any requirement to install or take up space, while having the backbone and muster of high-end servers running all the computational processing.
Two additional services will include full IT-managed desktops that will support just about any device and function required by the business, and a collaborative service that will offer voice and video conferencing for thousands of users simultaneously. Asus Eee PC 1025C and X101CH Specs Announced at CES 2012

The Asus Eee PC Flare 1025C, 1025CE and X101CH are all on display at CES 2012 this year.  While ultrabooks are far outnumbering netbooks this year, Asus still sees life in the category that they created.  There’s nothing new or terribly exciting for these netbooks compared to existing Asus offerings, but the price of $299 is still going to be enough to entice some people that want a tiny and cheap 10.1” screen laptop.  Let’s go over the specs and pricing for each model that Asus has announced:

The only difference between the 1025C and 1025CE Flare is the faster 1.86GHz Atom N2800 processor that the CE version comes with.  This bumps the price for the 1025CE up to $319.
Asus Eee PC X101CH Specs and Pricing:
  • Processor: Intel Atom N2600 1.60GHz dual core
  • Screen: 10.1 inches 1024 x 600 resolution

The specs on the X101CH are exactly the same as that of the 1025C, only the battery is half the size which cuts the battery life in half but also keeps thickness down to 0.86” and makes the laptop a half pound lighter at 2.3lbs.  Pricing on the X101CH will start at $269 and it will be available in February of 2012.  Stay tuned for reviews of these new Asus Eee PC laptops!
