One of the questions that has surfaced regarding the new Envy 15 is whether it does in fact have an IPS screen or whether that was another feature we’d see in pre-production but not production models. Happily, new owners are now receiving the Envy 15 and it does have an IPS screen. Forum member dreamwonder of the Notebookreview Forums posted the picture below which shows the Envy 15 with its screen tilted back on the right next to a non-IPS screen laptop on the left:
You can see the screen colors on the Envy 15 stay true at this wide angle while the other laptop with a TN based panel does not. The panel is apparently an LG made screen.
While this is happy news, other new users have been reporting issues with their newly delivered Envy 15 laptops, including dented USB ports and speaker grills and misaligned TouchPads. Apparently HP is having some QA issues and tried to rush orders out the door to get the laptops in customers hands ahead of Christmas. At least HP has a great return policy, anyone that ordered an HP product between November 2nd and December 24th 2011 can return the item for FREE through January 15th 2012.
Sadly there are no full reviews of the new Envy 15 and Envy 17 laptops published yet. We’ve got an Envy 15 on order but it’s not scheduled for delivery until January 4th. The Envy 15 review unit we configured has the following specs:
- Processor: Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz, 6MB L3 Cache
- Screen: 15.6-inch Radiance Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display
- Graphics: AMD Radeon 7790M 1GB
- Memory: 6GB DDR3
- Storage: 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
- Battery: 8-cell Lithium Ion
- Optical Drive: SuperMulti 8X DVD +/-R/RW
- Backlit Keyboard
- Wireless: Intel 802.11 a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth
- Warranty: 2-year limited
The configured price was $1,599 but I used the current NBT3886 30% off coupon to get the price down to $1,119.99. Once we get the Envy 15 and have had a chance to use it we’ll be posting a review
